So what is taking up valuable CPU cycles in my brain these days... What are that thoughts that rattle through various cells and junctions of that pink squishy mass?

Website stuff mainly... And what is it they say about mechanics, electricians and plumbers? Well... other than those things. Yes... they find little time to do their own Car's, Electrics and plumbing... So alas dear reader, your whinging blogger has segmented his brain for the following purposes...

The House Drakkar website, a site for the morally depraved wanna be Vikings out there willing to sell their war talents for Cider and food. Work on this site started in July, and the site went live on the First of August this year. It has now been handed over to the ever competent Egan to administer, however I am still involved in small maintenance tasks and larger updates.

The Barony of Rowany website, a site for all things good in and around Rowany. This site is consuming a greater part of my mental power (what little there is), tracking down information isn't as easy as it seems, though I do have a great support base. Being reletively new to full SCA involvement there is alot I am learning, hence the brain drain. But we are slowly getting to a point of easing off, where I can concentrate on detailing the content more and not so much of the chasing content and writing content.

This with my training obligations to Drakkar as a fighter, and my desire to get IKAC shoots happening in Rowany has left me little time to tinker here. So for that fellow reader(s), I am sorry.

Casual War this weekend in Canberra... I'm looking forward to this last War of the year, and then spending time preparing for Festival. So many projects, only "Two Weeks" to Festival...

Smoking the life out of us...

I'm a non-smoker... So what follows is a whinge based on my personal beliefs, and as such is not directed at anyone in particular.

As a non-smoker, I am constantly surprized by the idiosy that is smoking... To draw into your lungs toxic particles from burnt substances just seems totally un-natural, and well.... stupid. To top it all off, the number of people who smoke who have friends or family with lung problems is staggering. Sure, some of these smokers stand outside, and don't smoke in cars, or wind the window down, and then say "Well, I'm being conciderate, I have the window down!"

Most non-smokers would know, that that doesn't make a differance really. The car still fills with invisible passive smoke which they still have to breathe. So what about these people who smoke outdoors? Are they being conciderate to others? Well... lets see... A smokers smoke will travel on a breeze for about 50 to 100 metres before disapating enough to not be noticable.

Personally I don't think smokers really concider how much, or how many people their "right to smoke" actually affects people around them. Sure, they have that right, as do non-smokers have the right to breathe fresh clean air. Is it right to say "My right as a smoker is to smoke where-ever I choose!", yet have that one persons choice affect multiple people. I'm all for peoples right to do something, even if it is just plain stupid in my opinion, but when it affects more people than the individual who chooses to smoke, then I think it's only fair to concider the entirety of who is affected by that choice.

From what I have been able to work out, smoking was originally used in religious ceremonies and events, it wasn't something that people took part in every day. Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover tobbaco in the America's, and returned to Europe with it. Seems to me that all Western cultures opt to take the mysticism out of that which they cannot explain, by turning it into a popular everyday occurance. Through the 1600's, smoking became more and more popular, and developed into the industry we see today.

I am truely amazed that people pay not only the tobbaco company's, but the government as well, for the right to choose to distroy their health, make themselves smell bad, yellow their teeth, and possibly give them long term, or even life treatening health issues. What is the real benefit? The right to choose? The Ex-smokers I have spoken to rave about how much better they feel from not smoking, they rave about how much better their homes smell. While a few also say they miss it, they acknowledge that it is much better that they don't smoke.

More and more people are falling ill because of smoking each day, I for one have two people close to me who have life threatening illness' because of it. And whilst I love them dearly, and care for them and their health, I cannot bring myself to feel sorry for them. Their illness' were more than likely caused by smoking, which has been a documented cause of illness since 1602.

Here are a few facts about the documentation, as well as a link back to the Cancer Council website with the original article:

In 1602 an anonymous author published an essay titled Worke of Chimney Sweepers (sic) which stated that illnesses often seen in chimney sweepers were caused by soot and that tobacco may have similar effects. This was one of the earliest known instances of smoking being linked to ill health.

In 1795 Sammuel Thomas von Soemmering of Main reported that he was becoming more aware of cancers of the lip in pipe smokers.

In 1798 the physician Benjamin Rush wrote more on the medical dangers of tobacco.

During the 1920s the first medical reports linking smoking to lung cancer began to appear. Many newspaper editors refused to report these findings as they did not want to offend tobacco companies who advertised heavily in the media.

The SCA has got me... and I like it.

Ok, so I haven't been keeping up to day with posts on here... I just need to find the time to do it...

I'm really getting into the SCA, and as such have started a LiveJournal as well, to keep track of SCA related stuff, as well as find out what LiveJournal is all about, and keep intouch with SCA friend who have LJ accounts.

The plan is to still change Syridian.com over to a self contained blog, and no longer rely on Blogger.

In other news, Syridian.com was hacked this evening... Rules that control how we think what we can't do, what we can do, what we HAVE to do... Rules for how to behave, how not to behave... Rules, Laws and general conscience control our lives fully and there is no way of getting away from them, as there are rules to forbid that too.

Rules protect us don't they? But what are they really? Are they a means of control? For they certainly do that... But we as societies demand these rules don't we? How many of these rules are nothing more than reactionary bandaids to protect people from litigation rather than real attempts to fix problems?

How many laws these days are put into place to each year? How many of these are justifiable new laws which genuinely help society? And how many of these new laws are just bandaid solutions to a problem, or worse yet, are just a bandaid solution so that another new law fits lawfully in with all the rest of the laws.

Here's a couple of interesting Australian laws to think about courtesy of Amazing Australia.

No vacuum cleaners

Since December 14 it has been against the law in the outer Melbourne suburb of Brimbank to vacuum clean your house between 10pm and 7am on weekdays and 10pm and 9am on weekends, noisy cleaners will cop a $205 on-the-spot fine, which can rise to a $1000 court fine if it is not paid, and subsequent violations attract fines of up to $2000!

Cooking up a crime

In the Douglas Shire in north Queensland, roughly the area
from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation, it is illegal for guests in a B&B to
use the kitchen, it is illegal for a B&B host to cook the guests dinner, yet
the B&B policy states that dining room must be shared by host and
guests!

Devine devination of life's path...

Every now and then you come across someone who's inspiring words of wisdom, whether they be advise, questions or down right bitchy opinionations, enter your soul and tell you that this person has the right of it...

I have discovered such a guru in the wilds of Washington, USA. Or just my paraniod mind taunting me into thinking so... Do business and governments actually support the need for everything to cost money? Not only that, do they actually support it by helping companies and big business to over charge for simple services? I'll give you simple examples and let you decide.

The Australian Tax Office's E-tax software... It's Windows only, 2000 or XP... Fair enough you say, most of the population use Windows. But why do they use Windows? Is it because there aren't any free alternatives out there? Can't be that, there are plenty of free and easy to use alternatives. Why not make it a platform free solution, such as Java or some other solution that doesn't require Windows specifically? The ATO say that it will run on a Mac, if you have Virtual PC 7 and windows installed... Hmmm Are they promoting windows again? Why? Think about it. ;)

A friends Sub-division... A mate of mine decided to sub-divide his property so that a member of his family could build a house. With all of the fee's and contributions to the Water Board, and council, and everything that the council have told him he needs to do, so far the sub-division has cost over 25% of the property value, and so far all he physically has to show for all of that money (And it isn't a little sum either), is a small section of concrete driveway. The driveway mind you was done rather cheaply concidering other family members are in the landscaping industry. 80% of the money spent so far has been in paperwork and contributions, money spend to get a signature, or a stamp... Why? Think about it. ;)

In this modern world, we are governed, managed and manipulated by money. Cash makes the world go round. And where does all of this cash end up? Ultimately? Is it in your hands? You the general public? I'm thinking not... Rich people say they made their money by hard work, and determination. I believe them, but how do these rich people spend their money? They buy investment properties, do them up and then rent them out for more than market value. They buy other businesses, incorporating those businesses into their portfolio, usually stripping out what they don't want. They all do alot of things that are detrimental to a larger and larger number of people. Sure, they probably give back about 10% of what they make to charities, but what are they doing to make that 10%? Is it all good?

The thing is, people are just people, and very very few people are 100% good. How much publicity to rich people get when they give to charity? How much publicity do they get about their companies making millions, and paying their employee's minimum wages? What percentages of their employee's are paid fairly for what the company is earning? How many companies these days provide bonuses if they make large amounts of money? How many of those that do provide bonuses equally to all staff?

These are all just questions, one which I'm not willing to answer for you... Ones which I think we all need to ponder. I have thought about them, and I have my opinions, but My opinions aren't your opinions, and you need to come to your own conclusions. ;)

A Reconstruction of contemporary webspace...

Or just a simple overhaul of the Syridian.com website.

Seems to me that the site is getting a little old... Do popular people perceive the same perspective I peruse? Is empathy to another person’s perspective particularly unpopular these days?

Seems to me that these days we all (myself included), perceive that other peoples perspective’s are irrelevant to the way they deal with ourselves. We tend to be intolerant of people because they react a certain way to a perceived situation. The fact is, they probably have a different perspective, and perceive the situation differently. These in turn causes unexpected reactions from those we perceive to be the correct course of action. Should we impose our perception on these people? Is their perception wrong? Is yours?

The fact is, it's usually just different. People have different ways of dealing with different situations. We can try our best to make our intentions clear, and our desired outcomes obvious, but unless we specifically outline how we expect things to work, then we must expect individuality and different perceptions to make things happen differently to the way you expect.
Communication is a huge part of this... Providing clear instructions or polite, but detailed requests for tasks. Talking to the person involved finding out their perceptions of what happened. Understanding also, that when someone asks you about something, they are trying (In my case usually unsuccessfully) to assertion your perception of a given situation. Also it's best not to assume what other people maybe thinking, or perceiving, and talk to them about it, instead of just thinking you know them.

Do I practice what I preach here? Hmmm... I try to, but most of the time it's unsuccessful, due to my inadequacy in getting people to understand my perspective...

Quietly expressing opinions to the world.

I know... my opinions are at times very vocal, and very ummm... opinionated. Even critical and questioning of others... The thing is... it seems to me that people seem to take others expressions of opinions too personally at times. Voicing ones opinions doesn't mean that you intend for everyone to agree, and follow suite. If that happened, I would be so bored with life, as everyone would just be the same.

It sometimes bothers me that that simple question of "why are you doing it that way?", can be taken as an insult, or as a "Your doing it wrong!". When more often that not, someone just either wants to know, or might have a better idea of a way to do it. But in true fence-sitter form, I believe everyone has a right to express their opinions, and to express them to the world if they so choose, and if that expression takes the form of being insulted, then so be it. Everyone is an individual, and has a right to their own opinion. More often than not, even similar opinions differ slightly. It's my opinion that a differant opinion is just that, differant... So please don't be insulted if I don't argee with yours, but please feel free to express them to me. :)

Is it a question of faith?

It can't just be me who firmly believes that a large portion of the world live blindly following faith of some kind because it's easier, surely? Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't see the benefit for some people to believe in what ever god they choose to, or that I don't respect them as human beings, part of this wide and diverse world... It's just that well, it kind of bothers me how devoted some of these people get... how fanatical... and how easy it is for them to give up their freedom, and fall into a state of being lead, or controlled by a faith which has been created specifically to control the masses, to subdue them.

These people can still live by the beliefs of their faith without comprimising their mental freedom. There are valid points in every religion, and people should live by some form of moral control. But surely it is possible to do that, while not being totally under the control of a particular faith that teaches stories that are thousands of years old, and more than likely have evolved over that time to be more in tune with that faith.

Now I understand some of you readers will be saying, "Oh you're only saying that because of the 'Da Vince Code' and stuff like that". Well, yes and no... That book and other have provided a focus, for an enlightenment that has been brewing for years. You see, my mother insisted that I go to Church and Sunday school... yet the only thing that Sunday School taught me, was that the stories that make up the bible are nothing but badly interpreted points of view from a particular person, who had a particular perspective... and all of these stories are tainted with a bias for a particular religion. I'm not saying they are lies... I'm not saying they are exaggerations... I'm saying that they were written by one person, on one side, of one point of view, and they were written to spread the word, the Good word... They are nothing but ancient sales brochures.

Am I anti-religion? Yes I am. Why? Because religion is designed as a form of control over the masses. Because religion relies on belief as opposed to fact. It's an easy way out, "Why is is so? Because God made it, now pray to him." The simplist explaination is that it's a cop-out. However if you think more into the reasons why, you can see that it's a means of control. Give the people something to occupy their time, give them an easy answer they understand, drum it into them constantly, provide reminders that everyone believe this, and that if you don't then you aren't normal... Logic rules out in the end, but religious people would rather you didn't use logic.

If you are happier believing in some God, and don't want to know how life works, then I will repect you for that, I may even discuss it with you, as long as you don't actually think you can convert me. ;) I don't doubt the stories in the bible, in fact some of them outline a great and moral way to lead your life... I just doubt religious interpretation of those stories.

Chance perchance?

During a conversation with a friend the other day, the topic of luck or random events came up, and what followed was a philosophical discussion on the existance of randomness. You see... I don't believe in luck, good bad or otherwise. Strangly enough however I do believe in Fate. ;) More on Fate in a later article.

My friend insisted that events happen randomly, and that a bad turn of events can just be put down to bad luck. I however find this assumption a little nieve, not that I am saying that my friend is wrong with his beliefs, just that my beliefs differ. I believe that everything in life happens through cause and effect, so in effect I believe in the "Butteryfly Effect" The chaos theory that states if a butterfly here in Australia flaps it's wings, that has the potential to be part of an equation that may eventually cause a heatwave in England. Generally I doubt that the events would be that extreme, but it is an exaggeration that serves a purpose. The way I see it is, that everything happens as a reaction to something else, and this chain of reactions can and does span the world in millions of billions of tiny little equations.

Luck, or chance as a random event, I believe is just lazy way to ignore these equations, to generalise down to an everyday level, giving those who aren't really interested a means to dismiss. It's easier for some to believe in Luck, than in the fact that a chain of events caused something to happen. I'm not hear to explain why other believe in luck though, I'm here to explain what I believe in to share it with all of you, my readers.

So how does this work? This chaos theory? Well, in simple terms, think of a domino chain, you know, all the dominos standing on end... Think of multiple chains, criss crossing each other, merging, going around in circles... think of hundreds of these... all set up, all merged, crossed and entangled just waiting for something to tip one of the dominos. Now think of walking into a room (a Larger one) with all of this set up, you have just walked in, and all you can see is dominos standing on end, millions of them, at times you can see distinct chains, in other places it just looks like the dominos are stacked randomly. The fact is each one was placed there, the person who did it knew the intended pattern of it falling. Now think of a mouse on the hunt for food... it inadvertantly knocks one of the dominos before you have had a chance to look closely at the full setup. And the reactions start... domino's fall... chains head off and start multiple other chains, and in a matter of 30 seconds the whole thing is over. There are still patches of dominos standing though... Ones that didn't fall.

How does this explain Chaos Theory? Well, the person who set the whole thing up, knew almost exactly what would happen when he tipped the right domino. But! I hear you say, that mouse was a random event that triggered it incorrectly!!! Wrong... The mouse had a purpose, a goal. It was after food, why look for it in that room? Maybe that room, or warehouse floor was previously used to store foodstuffs. the mouse lived locally on those food stuffs previously, and was just out shopping for another meal. Just because the mouse was not part of the equation that the original domino setup guy thought out, doesn't mean it was a random event.

Think of all the chains of domino's... They were setup with a specific goal in mind, however when the mouse triggered them to start falling, they did not fall as they were originally calculated to. Some fell against their indended route, and the flow of events flowed backwards. Some cut off other events from happening. the fact is though, if you had the time, and the inclination, you could have calculated exactly what would have happened when that mouse bumped into a domino or two... Domino's are easy... however physics and biology in life are far more complicated, but that by no mean negates the validity of the equations.

If you had the time and the inclination, you could work out the future. But! Remember the mouse... The event that wasn't calculated, another equation in itself that externally effected the domino's... Life has SO many criss-crossing equations running every which way, and ANYTHING will affect the equation you might be trying to work on... So, next time you think of something as random, think of what caused that so called random event to effect your life equation.

The Bull$hit Artists

We all have our pet hates in life I guess, it's just a fact of life that certain things rub us up the wrong way, whilst others have no issue, or indeed enjoy them. My pet hate, or at least one of them, is Sales people.

Sales people go through alot of training... these days alot of them have degree's in Phsychology, they know how to push your buttons, they know when to do it, and they know who's buttons to push. Sales people may very well be nice people, but their job requires them to be sneaky and underhanded at times. Unfortunately it's not them that we have to blame for it. They have just studied human behaviour, and know how to exploit it. We as consumers are the ones to blame for letting them get the better of us, letting them control us, and what we buy.

They do this through a number of interesting techniques, so I think we should be aware of these techniques, and guard against them. Though some of these techniques may be mutually benificial, they are still a bit of control, and therefor something to at least be aware of.

Driving up the initial price. A clever technique is making the consumer think they are getting a damn fantastic price. This is achieved by initially releasing the product at a greatly inflated price, giving high spending consumers a chance to feel special, and feel like they are getting a top of the line product. Some times the product is even marketed as such. Once the sales figures start plummeting, they realise they have sold the limit to their high spending audience, and they drop the price to the next step down... Advertise it as a sale, and market it to the next price braket audience. This technique can work through a number of layers, sometimes without changing the product, other times with minor changes that don't cost much, but allow a greater number of units to be sold. So, next time you see the latest and greatest product out there, this what it'll be worth in 12 months time. ;)

Buy One, Get one free. You really think they are actually giving you a free one? See above... Greatly inflated prices allow products to have their value halved, and for the company to still make a profit. Thats what the whole game is about folks... Parting you from your money. Always ask yourself what the real value of the product is, and whether you really need two of them.

There are many other techniques that sales people use to trick you into parting with your money. The greatest defence against it is to be aware of it, and aware of the fact that they are trying to convince you to part with your money because they want to make a profit.

June News...

I am a very fickle person... I know this, but it's just me... I cannot change my ways, for if I did, I would be trying to be someone else. So, being a fickle person... My main focas seems to swap and change... one minute I could be fanatically into blogging every single day, telling all my wonderful readers all about my plans to take over the world... Then, then next week, i'll be gone for ages, off doing something totally differant. I'm fairly fanatical about everything I do, until I loose interest that is, or until the politics of it all becomes too taxing, and my interest is soured.

You have all seen my latest fanatical hobby, the SCA, a medieval re-enactment society who relive the idealistic Arthurian myth of the medieval era. Strangley enough while it has limited my blogging time, by giving me loads of other things to do, I do still have an interest in maintaining Syridian.com for my avid readers, all 4 of you. ;) So fear not... while I may post fewer posts... I shall try and make up for that with more entertaining crap from the mind of Syridian (Oh that would be me).

Latest Syridian.com news is that we have a new contributor to Sonnet-Boom. Look out for this site soon at http://drakkar.syridian.com.

Thats it for this weeks news... I may provide an insightfulful, and entertaining article in the next week... hopefully... but then again, it could just turn out to be a load of bollocks, and mindless dribble from a muttering madman.

Cold War - 2006

I have a new hobby, and it's going to be a time consuming one... I'm getting involved in something that I used to be partially involve with a very long time ago, so taking over the world with killer robots may very well take a back seat for a while.

The SCA is a fun and exciting sidetrack from the real world. A 1000 year trip back in time to medieval days... Complete with feasting, holding court, knights, battles, archery, and all the "My Lords" and "My Ladys" you could handle.

This June longweekend just gone, was my first SCA event in a very long time, and I very much enjoyed it. So... Work on the Killer robot project to take over the world has been handed over to Korea, along with proprietary brain that I developed (yes, the one with the hidden command sequence to gain total control when the robots are build and have already taken over the world). ;)

BTW, Happy Birthday to our lovely House Mother. ;) She knows who she is. ;)

Time to hone my wenching skills, and get my armour ready for Collage War 2006, coming up in a few weeks.

A glitch in the process.

Every now and then we all have something go wrong, something small.. something that we all think "Ahh, bugger, we'll I'll fix that in a while when I have a little more time". And then that little more time never comes right?

Well, thats how it has been with Bleep, Dots and Nonsense these last few weeks... It all started with Glitch, a glitch followed by a friend introducing me to an old hobby... A hobby which peaked and interest... An interest which sparked a desire... A desire which created a monster... and monster who ate my time... Hence, The Glitch, continued to be a glitch... As Time continued on, and a monster prevented me getting to fix the glitch.

The Glitch happens to stop me from submitting articles to Blogger from my PDA.

The Hobby happens to be medieval re-enactment through the SCA.

The Monster is me, when I have a desire, and an interest... I get focused and do SFA.

So, while articles have been written, they are having a little difficulting getting to blogger to be published... Over the next few days I intend to fix this issue, then publish the article over a day or two. In this case, a female friend was trying to understand a male friend of hers, who seemed to be trying to understand her. The whole issue of understanding was kinda getting in the way of the friendship.

Which lead me to give her a little advice… Us megalomanic geeks are of course also guru’s of other peoples relationships and well suited to giving advice, even if we are loners who don’t have girlfriends cause we are just too geeky for our own good. ;) “The advice??” I hear you scream… along with “Get on with it, and stop waffling on about yourself!!”

Oh ok… In my studies of human relationships, interaction, and general interactivity, I have noticed that far too many people NEED (with a burning desire) to either “Understand” or “Relate” to another person. When interacting with someone else, the require a connection, a peer group, similar interests. At the same time, they tend to dislike or detest people who don’t fall into their ideal world. This leads to people trying desperately to understand people, or categorize them, and if there isn’t a pideon hole to stick them in, there’s always the waste bin.

My Advice… Don’t try and understand people, don’t try and categorize them… Use your instincts to work out where you like someone or not, and then just like them for their diversity, their individuality. We all have enough things to worry about in life, we don’t need to worrying about who did what and why they did it, or why someone believes something that you yourself don’t.

"Thick" and "Deluded"

I have recently been accused of being "Thick" and "Deluded", as well as being called something I'm reluctant to repeat. One persons opinion, and obviously with some merit, as I am Thick, I prefer the term FAT, but if one of my readers feels that they need to compliment me, then "so be it".

As for Deluded, well here is an essay waiting to be written... For I cannot deny that either. I am deluded in alot of things... For thinking that the people of the world will one day rise and reclaim the freedom which they are happily letting slip through their fingers. I'm deluded in thinking that people are actually interested enough to actually understand the ravings of a madman.

I'm deluded in alot more also, but most of all, I'm deluded in thinking that people who resort to name calling and and abuse for the sole purpose of advertizing their own excrement finger painting, and blatant disregard for other peoples rights, property and peaceful life, actually have a right express their opinions also... But alas, I do.

Besides, I'm sure like all who opose my attempt to take over the world, this individual will be among the first to be crushed under the wheels of my army of Killer Robots.

Inspiration from afar.

There were a few days there when I didn't live up to my duty to you my reader, so today, I give you lots to read. I have come across a Blogger who has inspired me to live my dream, someone who whilst they are thrust into their situation, I long for it. While I feel for them, in their struggle to rectify their situation, I long to try that lifestyle myself...

The Wandering Scribe

The Wandering Scribe is someone who has found themselves living in a car, on the edge of the woods... No fixed abode. The freedom that this speaks of to me is deafening... To live like that, as a gypsy... Free to roam... Free to pull up camp and move on at a moments notice... Ahhh... I'm in heaven just dreaming about it...

You see fellow readers, for years, I have felt that society is too restrictive. You grow up, go to school, finish school, get a job, find a partner, settle down, have kids... The cycles repeats. The rules/laws we live by grow more complex, and slowly we let our freedom get eaten away. But not everyone finds themselves wanting that lifestyle. Some of us want the freedom, the loneliness. Some of us revel in not conforming to what society wants of us. Those of us that do, don't always shun societies rules and law... We just kind of separate ourselves from it.

And yet others... They plot world domination at the claws of thousands of killer robots...

Wandering Scribe, I salute you, we here hold your achievements in our hearts, and long to follow in your tire-tracks in the future.

The Blame Game, who really wins?

I woke up one morning a few weeks ago, and a thought hit me... Hit me quite hard too, as I still have the bruise to prove it. The thought might be slightly insane... But then I never admitted to being sane, infact I abhor the idea of sanity. The thought though? It went along these lines...

Are we such sheep, that we constantly let governments just walk all over us? Sure, there are those that question the political path... But in my observation 90% of us just plod along, dumbly following what the media tell us, and what big business tell us. I'm one of those sheep myself, I sit quietly and just live my life. But life has become very reactionary hasn't it?

Someone wrongs us, and we sue. An accident happens and we find someone to blame, and then sue. Are we not just following the "normal" way of life? Hmm you tell me... Was suing as big as it is these days, ten years ago? I'm sure it was with big business, and now that everything gets cheaper, it is within the general publics reach. To me that's fair I guess... But where does it stop? This blame game? It is the cause of laws being written, Business's going broke because they can't afford to pay the insurance needed. Community markets and events can't raise enough many to pay the insurance they need to protect themselves these days... And it just gets worse.

These days, households are responsible to provide third party insurance for their own yards. Laws are created to make sure people have Insurance. Long gone are the days that if you slip over in someone's yard, you take resposibility for your own actions. Now, you just blame someone else. There are SO many stories of people suing for the stupidest of things. A woman suing a council for not warning her that Magpies may divebomb during mating season. A thief tripping and falling over a hose on the roof of the museum that he was robbing. Friends suing other friends because they slipped on a step in their back yard. These people get away with it... Why?

And do we really wonder why there are people out there willing to just walk out into the middle of the road? Or why their are people who try and roughed the insurance system, driving up our premiums? Or why people want to take over the world with Killer robots?

A critical critique of critics

Can you really trust a critic to give you an informed opinion of something? I don't listen to them... Otherwise I would end up like my mate... missing out cause he's too stubborn.
Syridian says:He thinks that just cause of all the hype, the movies gotta be crap.
Syridian says:I say that the only way to determine that, is to watch it yourself... not listen to critics who not only have their own opinions on movies, but like to pick apart anything that doesn't conform to their own ideals.
2Blog says:yes i agree
2Blog says:but it's very rare that critics actually attack the actual construction element of the film
2Blog says:usually its cheap shots e.g. shit acting, plot holes etc
Syridian says:True... But EVERYthing has politics attached to it in business... Nobody gives their honest opinion... Specially critics.. they are paid to analyse and come up with a critique that appeals to their readers, following a governed set of rules by their publishers.
2Blog says:(no wonder he is blog mad)
Syridian says:Add to that the mix of their own personal opinion... and any underlying personal politics... how can you really trust a critic?
Syridian says:Hehehehe
2Blog says:wouldnt call it personal opinion - more like they inject there personalities
Syridian says:Speaking of the blog.. I might critique the critics just for the fun of it.
2Blog says:might as well
2Blog says:u just splurged out that much trash that no critic would have room to breathe a single breath
Syridian says:Although I think my issue is more with those that listen to the critics more than the critics themselves....
2Blog says:Syridian the Editor - please submit your blank paragraphs for publication
Syridian says:LOL...
Syridian says:Damn right. A void in space time where the only stuff that eminates is usually brown and smelly. Thus I must extract myself from this void, and return to the task at hand. World domination is back in the fore-front of my geekiness.

It seems that my competition is streaking ahead, after having actually started her research into robot construction. I therefore must now start at least to put my considerable resources to the same task. Regular readers would have followed the rapid expansion of this site, noting the addition of Syri-tronics. This will be the new home "Syritroniton" mark 1.

"Syritroniton" will be the first of a long line of robots designed with the specific task of bringing the world under my control. So I'm pretty much always guaranteed a seat where I want to sit. When the train starts filling up, and getting closer to my destination, I usually give up my seat to someone standing. Yes, there are still guys that do that... Although why, I don't know, when you hear or see the usual reactions I get from the people I offer my seat to.

Yes, OK, so I usually offer my seat to women... I have priorities... Pregnant women first, followed in order by elderly women, elderly men, then any women, if there are none that fit in those groups needing a seat, then I'll just get up and let the guys standing fight over it. However I would say that out of all the women I have given my seat to, only the elderly and pregnant women actually say thank you, or are nice about it. The average woman is usually very defensive, snapish, and sometimes just plain rude.

I guess that may be because they are not used to a geeky guy offering them a seat, I guess they must think I'm after something, or that if they accept this kindness, I will want something in return. The fact is, I do, all I want is a smile, maybe even a thankyou. It's become a chicken and egg situation though hasn't it? I mean, a few months ago, it was big news that people weren't giving up their seats for those that deserve them more, but with that sort of reaction, why would guys like myself bother to offer the seat we are comfortable in to someone else... Why wouldn't we just horde it until we get to our destination? Because giving up our seat is the right thing to do? Sure, it is... But then why are we made to feel guilty for it? Made to feel like we are a perverted stalker just wanting some sort of excuse to follow someone? And they wonder why no-one is willing to give up a seat... Where's the polite smile gone? Maybe the thank you?

Am I whinging? Yeah, I am... Maybe cause I'm getting tired of that look of horror I get for offering someone my seat... I admit, I'm a scarey guy, and I'll continue to offer my seat... Next time you get offered a seat, just think about your reaction. Stalkers are more likely to remember you treating them badly, than being polite. ;)

God, The Devil and Syridian...

Opinion on religious matters can start huge debates in many circles. Alot of people read/hear "God" or "Jesus" and either immediately turn off, or immediately start reading. We all have our opinions for and against... We all have an opinion, some conform to the Churches idea's, others have their own idea's. I am one of those that has their own idea's... And so that you can better understand the complexity and insanity that is Syridian, I shall now ram those idea's down your throats.

Open wide...

The big question, "Do I believe in God?" The answer is simple enough, I'm agnostic, and until God taps me on the shoulder and proves to me that he exists, I choose to believe in what I can see, in facts, in physical proof. I don't say that God does not exist... just that if God does exist, he/she has not provided enough evidence to make me believe.

The Bible has alot of so called 'proof' however if you actually read and study the bible with an open mind, it's easy to see the truth of what is told. My experiences with a number of religions has been that they try and teach you at a young age to "have faith" and "believe". This is because if the Bible is taught to free thinking adults, they can see it for what it really is. It's a collection of historic books that have been edited together for the benefit of controlling the masses. Since mankind developed the means to draw and write, we have written down history so that it can be recorded for future generations. If this is understood, and the motivation of the "church" is understood, then the text of the Bible is easily understood. With the right perspective, the truth can be seen. The "church" over the years, has manipulated people into believing in God for it's own goals, those goals being suplication, control and power.

"Wholey Crap!!" You may say... "You are just against the church".

To that I'll answer "Yes, I am". That is MY perspective... my opinion.

Then you may say "well what about Jesus, and all the good he did. He was around before most of the churches today, and he preached the word of God".

True, he did... And in all honesty, I will admit to believeing in some of what he taught. However, like chinese whispers change the word of one person into something completely differant. I believe the gosples have been tainted over the centuries into saying what the church wants them to say. The Bible as a whole is HIGHLY edited, even the King James version is just a collection of gospels that support the churches view. So what do I believe about Jesus?

Check out Next Weeks post on religion to find out...

Syridian.com proudly presents Sonnet-Boom.

In an effort to encourage poetry and creative writing, I opened a new section to the Syridian.com empire. Huh? Syridian's posting poetry? Well Yeah... So now you want to hear why?

Whilst I'm no poet, there are occasionally those times when I feel peotic... And Desire was written during one of those poetic periods in my life... About 8 months ago I think... While I was looking around the web and came across Poetry.com. They have poetry copetitions, where daily they give away money, and all you have to do is write a poem. So I entered, but in doing so, had to give the website my email address. And there you have it... thats why it came into existance.

"But why Syridian have you stuck it here now?" I heard you ask...

Because yesterday while checking my email, I came across this great email, that made me feel all warm and fuzzy... But well, it left me feeling good. :) And then cheated...

Dont you just LOVE those marketing people. ;)

Desire

Her hair so red,
my heart I dread,
has locked my brain away.
her eye's so blue,
my lust she drew,
and follow I must this day.

Copyright ©2006 Syridian

Movie Madness - "A quickie about the flickies"

Ok, so this is a shameless "Quickie" with little thought and not much research. Late nights tend to bring that out in people. ;)

The owner of the company I work for just brought down the latest FilmInk Magazine, something he has done since my subscription ran out, and I neglected to renew it. It's a great Magazine, don't get me wrong, and I may renew it again soon. It's just that my renewal came along during a time of financial pucker'dness (yes, I was being a tightarse), and it was one of those things that I sometimes glance through, but never really sit and read cover to cover.

The mag has a GREAT reviews section, and I particularly enjoy the way in which they score their movies. They are rated out of $14.50, yes folks... they are rated acording to what the reviewer thinks you should have paid for the ticket. I like that meathod, but I do think it has a few floors... But then I am one who thinks that REVIEWS are just one persons opinion, and should not be used to judge the individuals responce to a particular movie. If you like the look of the preview... GO see the movie, don't read a crappy review, and then decide "aww naaa... It got bad reviews" You might like it anyway. :) The only time Reviews hold any sway with me, is if I find a reviewer that has the exact same opinions that I do with movies...

That said... Here are some of the worthwhile movies, according to FilmInk anyway. :)

The New World scores highest, followed by Hidden and Kokoda. Next on the score chart is I Know I'm Not Alone, On A Clear Day and Live And Become.

Syridian.com Forum is now open to the public.

We are proud to offer all reader access to the Syridian.com Forums, where you are able to discuss any topic, have in depth public discussion and generally share your opinions with other readers.

The forum can be accessed from the button in the sidebar. Not because doing so would bring you to the conclusion that one's worth is equal to the ratio of true friends and family to general hanger-er-on-er-ers, and really has nothing to do with what we achieve in life (to be explained later)... But because it shows us that in the bigger scheme of life, we are but a grain of sand and therefore subject to the winds of life.

What the....?!?! Where's this heading I hear you scream.

The grain of sand doesn't care where life takes it. We as humans have control over our destiny do we not? Sure, some choices take half a lifetime to bring us to the conclusion of that decision, but they are choices we made, and must live with. Is it worth creating stress to deal with the consequences?

So how do we deal with those consequences when they occur? In my observations, most of us do stress, and over the smallest things at times. Could it be regret for a badly made choice? Blame rears its ugly head a lot too, blaming others, pointing a finger. There are numerous world events that have shown this response time and time again.

So what's the point of this article?

Well, if I were an arrogant person, it would be me telling you all to look inward, question what brought you to this point in your lives. But honestly, that's not me. Your lives are yours to live, and ultimatly, there is only one person who's opinion matters in the end, yours. So what is the point?

The point is, I write what I want to write, and hopefully you read it because you want to read it. Either way (whether you like it or not), I hope that you come to that conclusion on your own and not because someone else influenced it.

Hmmm... That's enough of the philosophy, lets get back to the seriousness of making people giggle.

In Geek we trust...

Seems just as I thought my plans for world domination were getting somewhere, I find there are more than one of us meglomaniac geeks out there. My plan of rapid expansion of my blogspace into a multi-national corporation to rival the likes of Google and Micro$oft is currently on schedule. 3 weeks into it, and I have expanded to a Multi blog site, have 2 contributors, and small range of merchandise. Once Syridian.com starts to provide real competition to Micro$oft though, I'm going to need an army of killer robots to forcably protect my investments for hostal take over attempts.

Sarah Smith of Sez.so fame seems to share my future plans of taking over the world with killer robots, maybe I could get her on board to help design and build my army... She seems to be starting at the basics, but as M$ has shown us numerous times, some times it's just best to throw out all the previous Bleep and start anew (oh, thats right... they haven't lead by example on that one, they just continue to show us what not to do). Well worth Channel 9 interupting one of their highly rated shows for. I for one was excited about it, and wanted to hear more! 15 minutes before hand I had just watched a 2 minute "Breaking News" story on one of the other networks, which was informative and precise, but left me feeling starved for more... So when Channel 9 cut in to CSI to let us know the same thing, I thought cool, they took the extra time to better prepare and get us more info...

So is that really what they did? Were any of you watching? Here comes the weekly whinge... Channel 9's reporting was nothing more than laughable. Mike Munrow and the emminently forgetable Nick, their reporter on the scene started out much the same way as their
competition, same news, same interviewee, same interview. What happened next was where the fun, or distinct lack there of, started. What they should have done is finish, go back to CSI, and come back when the situation had changed, what they did... Well, was just bleeping silly. Mr Munrow asked silly question after silly question, to which Nick didn't have the answers for. This went on and on... Mike pressing for answers, Nick who clearly couldn't string a decent sentence together without an auto-cue, looking around as if they were written on a board somewhere. 20 minutes later these two finished up their innane banter, and let us get back to CSI. What The...?!?!

It would have been funny if it weren't so boring. We needed to know details, they didn't have them, so let us get back to our show, and let the families of those two miners get back to supporting each other.

To top the whole night off. They did the whole thing again about 30 minutes later... What utter nonsense! The network should never let these two individuals work a live breaking news story again. In my opinion (which doesn't mean much), they should both be sent away to do a week long workshop on how to present this type of news.

Rant over with... The other partner is never to look in there.

But after 20 years, the husband's curiosity gets the better of him and he looks in the draw. He finds three eggs and $120.
When his gets home, he fesses up to taking a look.

"What did you find"? she asks him. 'At Sun, we don't piss on our hands.'

The Diver

One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below sea level. The diver went down another 25 feet, but minutes later, the same guy again joined him. A place of worship for those like myself who have a passion for going to the cinema. While the occasional review might be posted in here, this is more about the experience as a whole. Boring so far? Well that’s because we are still in the pre-movie advertising section, where I try sell you the merits of this product in a cheesy advertising voice while showing you cheaply produced slides.

Now for the previews...

Movie Madness is about the movie going experience as a whole, not necessarily the particular movie being seen. Future articles may include descriptive diatribe of a particular patrons patronage, or scintillating stories of sexual stardom in the back row (Not me! Im a pervert, I prefer to watch). There could even be the odd article about what other movie goers thought (if its particularly controversial, or tease-worthy) , and I may even throw in the occasional rant on a great movie that I have just watched (look for these, as they are great opportunity's to poke fun at my weirdness). So stay tuned.

The Main feature.

Now we get to the main event... If you have a similar taste in movies to me, then you would appreciate movies that subtly provide a witty life commentary, and require more thought involved to actually understand. Movies such as Sideways, Serenity, and even Waiting are a few that come to mind. They seem to take the long difficult road to no-where in particular, but in my opinion, they do it in style. Now… What surprises me about these types of movies is that there are people out there that really… Just don’t get them. Which is fair enough, but if you “Don’t get it, then say you don’t get it, or admit that it was a little too cerebral for you, or that you didn’t find it entertaining. I like listening to other peoples opinions, on life, movies, and even politics, but when those people make it clear that they don’t understand something, but still call it a pile of bleeping bleep, it kinda makes me arch my back and think, well hang on… If you don’t get it, then how can you really say whether it’s nonsense or not? Sure, it’s an opinion… But is it really their opinion? Or just a defensive reaction to being made to feel a little dumb cause they don’t get it? Anyway… Each to their own… I guess they are entitled to that opinion, as I’m entitled to think that their opinion is misinformed and ill judged. ;)

Gotta love opinions... It's time to blow my own trumpet, toot my horn and then come back to the real world to talk technicial, after washing my hands of course.

So, In this first edition of Tech Talk, I was actually going to explain a project I have been working on for the last couple of months to start a key start generator from a single relay contact or switch... However, I started writing it... and then 3 pages later got to about where I should start, and well... Still hadn't started. So I have put that masterpiece of literary genius on the back burner for when I feel like publishing a small book. So, I hear you ask, where is this now going? Ahhh, so good of you to ask. Oh? You didn't? Ok, I won't tell you then....

Ahhh... So now you want to read more hey? OK, Well, last night while sorting through my collection of bits and bobs (No boobs I'm afraid, more the shame), I came across something I have held onto since my apprenticeship oh so many years ago. It was just an old Printer Buffer, nothing special. But I remembered why I kept it, it was a nice sized project box. Isn't it amasing how someones junk becomes another useful item... Truth be told, it was my junk for almost 12 years. Looking at it I thought, should I Ebay this? But cogs were turning... the fleshy database of my mind was doing a Terminator style search, trying to find a match. As it turned out, there were a few other bits in my bobs box (still no Boobs, I keep looking though). And so that old lighter with no gas was starked up... Took a few tries mind you. Bits came together, bit's got discarded... and FiDo Ver 1.0 was born!

What is FiDo? FiDo, as the name suggests, is just a Dog... well, in this case an electronic dog. What FiDo does is retrieve Data from the Internet and other sources. I see you all looking at me strange... Thats what a computer does, I hear you say. Well, yes... FiDo is a computer, but FiDo is also small, almost silent, and doesn't eat much (power that is) FiDo also stays on permenantly, displaying data when ever you choose to look. At about 10Watts, FiDo uses about the same electricity as an energy saver light bulb. He has Ethernet, and LCD Display and a number of Inputs and Outputs, and can do anything that software will allow him to do. Ok, ok, ok.... So at the moment he's only a concept. One with hardware almost in place, and loads of decisions to be made, and hours and hours of frustrating caffine drinking hair wretching fun to be had.

Uses for Fido.

Internet connected Atomic Clock

Local Time Server

Webcam upload

Email notification

Weather data retrieval

News retrieval

Blog retrieval

Just a few Idea's to start with anyway. I shall let you all know how things go in future articles. Anyone who would like to help with the software side is more than welcome, in fact... PLEASE HELP... I like my sanity. ;) Oh... hang on, it's already too late for that.

Has Syridian sold out?

In this new age of electronics commerce, and ads on webpages providing a small income for those that run them, have I really sold out to big business by providing Google with the oportunity to Advertise on Bleep, Dots and Nonsense? Surely they can't be serious? And that they are sitting there behind their computers laughing at the internet community as a whole as they debate the validity of comic genius, or total bleeping moronic stupidity.

Either way, I'm guessing Shelley's making a fortune from the advertising on her site, and if she isn't, then I guess that ends the argument, and validates the stupidity of some people.

I'm hoping for your opinions in comments on this one... Are they having us all on? Is it a joke of monumentus preportions? Or do you think they are serious.

A balancing act.

This commentary is by no means new, but just serves to remind us all of the good things in life while the media still finds depressing news to fill us all with worry.

I'm a huge believer in always trying to see the good in the world, bad things will always happen but there is usually something good that only happens because of it. A bushfire always renews the bush, it bounces back, better and more beautiful than before. Yet another part of me thinks well, why not share my nonsensical slightly insane muttering with the rest of the world. As least one of you out there might at least find it partially amusing, or if not that, then at least take the time to read it.

So this is the official Welcome post to the "Bleep, Dots and Nonsense" Blog, where you get to read the nutty ramblings of a bleeping thirty something geek, as he whinges and whines his way through the working week.

OR! I could surprize you all with witty and amusing stories from the wacky world of well.... me.

And if that doesn't amuse you, I feel that I would indeed have to resort to strapping you to a large immovable object and read to you from the Intergalactic Encylopedia of Vogon poetry. You don't want that trust me... Even without the translatory properties of the common Bable fish ( which as we all now know does NOT translate with 100% accuracy, in fact it's pushing the bounds to say it's 60% accurate. ) , Vogon poetry still has the potential to cause brain damage, as the brain tries to detach itself for the ear drum and receeding high into the cranium, and crushing all other brain matter in an attempt to isolate itself from any attempt of the poetry actually being heard. This phenomon is much like crush at a Marilyn Manson concert, when John Farnham steps onto the stage to sing "Sady, the cleaning lady" and 100 thousand screaming concert goers run screaming from the arena crushing and trampling any in there way in an attempt to escape the onslaught. So, you have been warned...

Now, where was I? Ahh yes, and the weather day was...

Advance Australian Intolerance.

Is it just me? Or do other people notice that the good old Aussie "She'll be right Mate" attitude is dwindling. The Cronulla riots seem direct evidence of that fact, but if you look around, you can see it more and more. People seems to be more vocal about what THEY want, and how THEY think things should be done. Is it no longer just accepted that people are differant? Others seem to want to do something about making people more like themselves.

Maybe I'm the one that longing wants others to accept tolerance, maybe my desire for tolerance is manifesting itself in an intolerance for intolerance, but hold on... don't two negatives make a positive? Is not an Intolerance of intolerance equal to tolerance? Alas, I think not. Therefor, I am just as confused as I usually am, and I'm just spouting nonsense again.

But... back to the topic, are the days of just accepting that other are differant and leaving them to their lives fading? Is Australia becoming an intolerant society? Are we segregating ourselves into small minority groups, each fighting vocally for a say at how our lives are governed? Is it possible for individual groups as these to sustain friendly and tolerant relations, when laws, rules and cultural differances each conflict? So, what the bleep can we do about it then?

Maybe this post is just here for you to ponder... connect the dots... add two and two and come up with nine.

A Good man, A good life... While overall, train travel is an easier way for me to get to work, it constantly surprizes me to find out how Bleep the ShityRail staff can be at times.

As a frequent traveller I have to catch one train from home in the mornings, to Hornsby Station, change there to catch a train down the Northern Line to work, a total of fourteen stations. Which now, under the new time table means catching three trains to get to work. Reverse that... thats a total of six trains per day, an hour and forty minutes of travel time each day, just to travel what out of peek hour takes me twenty minutes to drive. Not really much when I'm sure there are thousands more people who's ShityRail experience each day is at least twice that. I take my hat off to those people who put up with more.

My biggest bugbear, which thankfully hasn't happened since the new timetable, but happened at least six times prior to the new timetable, was particularly frustrating. The scene is set... After work on a standard work day, at the station, waiting for the train, which seems a little late, but then, thats normal. The Newcastle train arrives, luckily no more than ten minutes late, so I should be able to make my connecting train. Off we go, it's a normal train trip, music, dancing games (Oh, on my PDA of course. Standard straight faced boring train travellers in the carriage)... Pulling into Hornsby Station, I can see that my connecting train is waiting with doors open on the other platform. My train stops, doors open, it's a rush for the stairs as everyone who needs that train tries to get there, the same time, those that arrived on that train are streaming over the connecting bridge to hop onto the train we just got off. I'm the first to the bottom of the stairs just in time to see the doors close, the train pulls off, and the guard just shrugs and taps his watch as he see's the steam slowly emminating from my ear's. Why am I so annoyed? Surely it's understandable that the train must leave on time? Sure, but here's the thing... Not only is there a thirty minute wait for the next one, but the one I just missed... the one that HAD to leave on time, head about one hundred and fifty metres up the track, to be stopped by a signal, and there it waits for five whole minutes, as the Newcastle train I have just gotten off hasn't left the other platform yet. So, there I stand with about twenty other disgruntled train travellers, annoyed, and thinking "Well, they must be smart, and need to clear the platform for a terminating train or somthing." Seems like a logical thing doesn't it? Checking the schedule reveals that the next train isn't for fifteen full minutes. What utter Nonsense.
